Jefferson Intermediate School- Fairbury, Nebraska
About a month ago, we received our first contact from a school in Nebraska! A third grade teacher, Mrs. Cyndi Shinn, from that school contacted me to say her class kicked off a fundraising campaign to raise money for a Buddy Bench. They read the story in Scholastic News and left her a Post-It note (she was out that day) saying they needed to talk to her. She supported her students’ desire to get a Buddy Bench and in just one week, they raised $506! They were able to get the labor donated and received a substantial donation from a local Autism Awareness group in their community. Because of that generosity, they were able to raise enough money to buy two benches! They decided to give the other bench to the elementary school in their district. The students chose a bench design that they liked and their teacher’s son (a college student) helped draw the plans and estimate the cost. It looks great!
After their dedication ceremony, during which they had a Skype chat with Christian, their bench was featured in three newspapers! Click here to read the article and see the picture from the dedication. We are so proud of them and all of their hard work. According to Mrs. Shinn, “this has been an awesome opportunity to show my students to set goals, dream big, and you can make real changes in your community!”. What a fantastic message to send!
What is the Buddy Bench?
Roundtown Elementary helped make this possible, and we thank them for being receptive to Christian's idea!
